Although the very latest technology and mechanical sawing is utilised, experienced craftsmen still continue to split tiles in the traditional Cornish way. Using a bettle and chisel, each tile is individually hand-split along the 'grain' of the stone, exposing it's natural texture. Slate tiles split in this way are described as 'riven'.

The natural colour of Delabole Slate is predominantly blue/grey. If required, a specialist sealant can be applied which can darken the tiles, enhance natural markings, or produce various gloss or matt finishes.

Riven - most Delable Slate Tiles are split by hand exposing the natural 'riven' texture of the slate.
Honed - a matt polished tile, fine rubbed to a smooth finish (like an egg-shell to the touch). The polishing will slightly darken the slate providing a more sophisticated appearance. Also known as Fine Rubbed.
Frame Sawn - a sawn but unpolished tile. Although there may be some surface markings, it is perfectly suitable for flooring. Such saw marks will disappear with wear.

Because of natural variation in the cleavage of the slate, all thicknesses are nominal and will vary from tile to tile. Any variation should be easily taken up in the bedding during fixing.

Slate floors require only regular washing with soap and water to retain their appearance.
