Delabole Slate has been used for paving for many centuries, establishing
a reputation for it's lasting quality.
Blue/grey
Paving is manufactured from slate extracted deep in the quarry, and has
high compressive strength and excellent wear resistant properties. These
characteristics make it ideally suited for high traffic paving areas.
Rustic
paving (predominantly coloured browns, yellows and other mixed autumnal
colours) is also available in Crazy Paving form but is less durable than
blue/grey slate.
THE
FOLLOWING PRODUCTS ARE NORMALLY AVAILABLE EX-STOCK:
Crazy Paving
is irregular in shape and produced in totally random sizes by hand splitting
"holobobs" (small slate blocks) in the quarry. Approximate size
ranges are from 36" x 24" (915 x 610mm) to 12" x 6"
(305mm x 152mm).
As well as the traditional
Delabole Blue/Grey Crazy Paving, Rustic Crazy Paving is also available.
Four Sided Paving
is the most popular Delabole Slate paving product. Sawn on all four sides
to random rectangular shapes, sizes vary from around 22" x 11"
to 12" x 6" (560 x 280mm to 305 x 152mm). Four Sided Paving
can be laid to give a naturally random appearance.
Large paving
slabs, cut to random sizes at least 16" x 16" (450 x 450mm).
This is a new product from Delabole Slate, introduced to meet customer
demand for larger slabs. Fewer pieces and less joints, hence quicker and
lower cost installation are obvious benefits.
We cut normal
Four Sided Paving to standard widths. Coursed paving provides a much more
regular appearance, as well as saving money by reducing on-site cutting
to a bare minimum. Widths currently available are 10" or 8".
Other widths can be made to order - please ask.
PLEASE NOTE; Whilst
approximate sizes have been provided as a guide, some Delabole Paving
slabs may well be larger or smaller than the figures stated above.
All our paving
is split by hand along the natural 'grain' of the stone exposing a rugged,
attractive riven surface. Consequently, the thickness of each piece can
vary from 3/4" to 1 ½" (20mm to 40mm). Such variation
can be easily taken up by the bedding material.
Delabole Paving is
best laid into a standard dry mortar mix of 3:1 sand and cement. Paint
the back of each slab with neat cement slurry before laying to improve
adhesion. After 24 hours, joints can be grouted if required. Some customers
prefer to lay paving merely on a sand base. This is suitable for single
slabs, but not ideal for larger areas such as patios.
Diamond tipped tools
(such as a portable circular saw, or angle grinder with diamond blade)
should be used for on-site cutting. Use water to cool the blade and lubricate
the cutting if possible. Wear a dust mask if necessary.
It is important that
any cement residue be cleaned off the paving at the time of laying. Whilst
not permanent (such residue can be removed with chemical cleaners), it
is easier to keep the slabs clean as work proceeds.
